Bethany's Story | From Theatre Lights to Audit Insights

Hi, I’m Bethany and I am an Audit Semi-Senior. Six years ago, my life looked completely different, and I could never have imagined myself in this career. What began as a huge leap of faith during a difficult time has become a path I am proud to be on today.
My Career Journey
"I am now in my third year here, building experience, growing in confidence and working towards becoming fully qualified."
Six years ago, I was working as a technician backstage in a London theatre. It was a job I loved, full of energy and creativity, but when theatres closed during the Covid pandemic lockdown everything stopped overnight. Like many people, I was forced to rethink what I wanted and what a more stable future might look like.
I decided it was time for a career change and enrolled on a two-year accounting course at college. Going back into education as an adult was a challenge, but it helped me find a direction that felt secure, interesting and full of opportunities.
Once I qualified from college, I looked for a firm willing to take me on without a degree and support me through a professional qualification. I applied for a school leaver position in Edinburgh at MHA and was offered the role. I am now in my third year here, building experience, growing in confidence and working towards becoming fully qualified.
My Role Today
I work in Corporate Audit, which gives me exposure to a variety of clients and industries. We often visit clients on site, which is one of the parts I enjoy most. Seeing how different organisations operate, how processes work in real life and how businesses run behind the scenes has been fascinating.
I love the pace of the work. No two days are the same, and there is always something new to learn. Audit has many layers to it, and I enjoy the challenge of building my skills and understanding how everything fits together.
One of the things I appreciate most is the team I work with. From fellow trainees to management, everyone is friendly, approachable and always willing to help. It makes such a difference to be surrounded by people who support your development and answer your questions without judgement.
Being part of a team where you feel encouraged and able to grow is something I never take for granted.
If there is an opportunity to take the next step in your career, take it. Say yes first and then give it everything you have. Approach it with a positive mindset, work hard and you will get the most out of it. One opportunity often leads to another.
A Message to Women Considering Their Next Step
If there is an opportunity to take the next step in your career, take it. Say yes first and then give it everything you have. Approach it with a positive mindset, work hard and you will get the most out of it. One opportunity often leads to another.
You do not need to feel completely ready. You just need to be willing to try.
Changing careers can feel daunting, especially when you are starting from the beginning again. It is not easy and it can feel like a big leap. But it can also be incredibly rewarding.
If my journey shows anything, I hope it is this: you are allowed to change direction, you are allowed to start again and you can build something new for yourself, no matter where you began.
