How to prepare for your assessment

Getting ready for a verbal & numerical assessment and don't know what to expect? We've put together our top 5 tips to help you succeed.

There is more to accounting than just numbers. Collaborating with other teams, working closely with our clients, and providing advice will also be part of your role. It is important to note that, even though numerical skills are an important part of your role, there are many other key skills we will be looking for.

What is an verbal & numerical assessment?

A verbal & numerical assessment, also known as a aptitude assessment, is designed to evaluate a person's natural ability to perform specific tasks or acquire certain skills. It assesses a person's potential for learning and success in a particular area, such as problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, or numerical reasoning.

Take a look at our top 5 tips below.

Top 5 tips for a verbal & numerical assessment!

  1. Practice before the real thing Practice makes perfect, as cliché as it may sound! Practice assessments allow you to familiarise yourself with the layout of the assessment, including the kinds of questions asked and the timing of the assessment. As part of our assessment process, we provide a practice test option. Practice and hone your skills in the specific areas being assessed. This can help you to feel more confident and prepared on the day of the assessment.
  2. Manage your time It's not about how fast you answer, but how effectively you answer, so don't rush through. You should maintain a pace that enables you to answer as many questions as possible without compromising accuracy. Make sure to leave enough time to check and review your answers.
  3. Stay calm and focused It is normal to feel nervous when taking part in an assessment. Maintain a calm and focused attitude as stress can affect your performance. Take deep breaths, use positive self-talk, and approach each question with confidence. Don't worry, you've got this!
  4. Are you in the right environment? Before your assessment, take a look around and ensure you're in an environment where you feel comfortable and focused. Don't allow yourself to be distracted, so find a quiet place to work and put your phone away. Clear your mind and focus on the task at hand.
  5. Create a checklist It's important not to get halfway through your assessment and realise you don't have something you need. Prepare a checklist to ensure you have everything you need. Have you got a calculator on hand, something to write down notes on? Does your laptop/computer have a good internet connection and is it charged? Perhaps you need a glass of water? Keeping yourself organised will enable you to perform at your best.
