Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept for tax professionals. It is already here, reshaping how advisory work is done.

On 2nd October, MHA and Women in Tax hosted What the Tech?! AI in Tax”, a panel event exploring AI’s impact on the tax profession. Experts from MHA, Crowe, and LexisNexis shared insights into current applications, emerging trends, and the evolving role of tax professionals in a tech-enabled world.

Technology’s Growing Impact

AI is evolving rapidly and transforming more areas of tax than ever before. While AI has long been part of the profession, its applications are now broader and more transformative. They are fundamentally changing how tax professionals operate.

How AI is Redefining the Adviser’s Role

AI is not about replacing humans. It is about augmenting their capabilities. Nic from LexisNexis highlighted three key aspects of the modern adviser’s role:

  1. Prompt construction: Clearly define questions and desired outputs when using AI.

  2. Output review: Critically assess AI outputs, verifying citations and adjusting for best practice or client-specific context.

  3. Client relationships: Use your knowledge of clients, their goals, and priorities to tailor AI insights, making outputs personalised rather than generic.

The panel also emphasised the importance of developing the next generation of tax professionals, ensuring they gain hands-on experience and expertise even as AI handles more routine tasks.

  4. Embrace change cautiously Understand AI’s capabilities and limitations while exploring its potential.
  5. Think beyond efficiency Use AI not just to work faster, but to achieve outcomes previously impossible.

The Future of AI in Tax

The rise of AI in tax is not just about efficiency. It is about transformation. Over the next 1 to 3 years, AI is expected to become deeply embedded in tax workflows, reshaping how professionals approach compliance, planning, and strategy. Agentic AI, systems capable of performing tasks autonomously, will become more common. Professionals will focus on advisory and strategic decision-making, leveraging AI to identify opportunities at scale while providing critical oversight.

As the panel emphasised, embracing AI thoughtfully today is the key to thriving in tomorrow’s tech-enabled tax landscape.

"Looking five years ahead, I can see AI becoming a standard part of the everyday toolkit for tax professionals, fundamentally changing how we approach our work.”"

Beverley Scott, Partner MHA

"Experimentation is key. These AI tools allow us not just to do things faster, but to achieve outcomes that were previously impossible."
