In January 2025, the Labour Government launched its AI Opportunities Action Plan, a “blueprint to turbocharge AI”.
However, critics in the Not for Profit sector have since noted that the Plan omits to mention charities or voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations. In response to this the Charity AI Task Force was formed, calling for “immediate collaboration” between the sector and the Government.
As highlighted by CAST, a charity which helps other charities and social impact organisations to make the fullest use of digital technology, AI usage in the Charity sector has, per the 2025 Charity Digital Skills Report, increased over the past year from 61% to 76%. The Charity AI Task Force aims to provide further recognition and support for the growing role AI has in the sector, and currently has several evolving key missions:
- To act as a collective voice for AI in the charity sector
- Influence responsible, ethical and inclusive use of the technology within and outside of the sector
- Encourage collaboration between key groups such as funders, regulators, large and small charities, and businesses, and aligning efforts to ensure quicker support for the sector.
The Force currently consists of more than 20 member organisations, including the National Lottery Community Fund, Access Social Care, Big Give, London Funders, King’s College London, Trust for London, Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales, Shelter, Charity Digital and TLC.
