From Graduate to Director: Jack’s Journey at MHA

· Posted on: May 5th 2025 · read

When Jack joined MHA as a graduate in 2011, he had no idea just how far the journey would take him. Today, he’s a Director in our Audit team — a role that reflects his commitment, growth, and the opportunities MHA offers for people to shape their own path.

We caught up with Jack to hear about his career so far, and how his story reflects the people-first culture at the heart of MHA.

A Supportive Start

Jack’s story begins at the University of Manchester, where he studied International Business, Finance and Economics. He graduated with a 2:1 and joined MHA immediately after:

“I was attracted to MHA because they had local offices and a fantastic graduate scheme. It felt structured, accessible, and above all — supportive. The ACA programme was a great bridge between university and working life.”

From day one, Jack was never just a number — he became part of something bigger.

Growing Together

"When I joined, there were just four of us on the graduate trainee programme in the North West. Today, the number of young professionals choosing MHA continues to grow every year"

Over the past decade, Jack has seen first-hand how MHA has evolved — not just in scale, but in spirit.

“So many of our senior leaders — including partners and directors — started out as trainees or apprentices. That shared experience builds real empathy. It means people can relate to where you’re at in your career, and they’ll always take the time to support you.”

At MHA, people grow together. That’s not just a value, it’s the way the business runs.

A Culture That Invests in People

As Jack explains, this culture of support extends beyond career development — it’s part of everyday life at MHA:

“There’s an understanding that people develop at different paces. The firm supports you through your exams, and if things don’t go to plan, there’s always someone to help you navigate the next steps — without judgment, just support.”

“It’s never about pressure for the sake of it. It’s about helping you become the best version of yourself.”

MHA believes in you — your ideas, your contributions, and the unique perspective you bring. It’s not about titles or background, it’s about where we can go together.

Stepping Into Leadership

After qualifying in 2014, Jack began managing a portfolio of clients and quickly took on new responsibilities:

“I started line-managing, became an ICAEW student councillor, and from there moved into a senior manager role. That’s when I became more involved in the operational side of our audit team. Last year, I was proud to be promoted to Director.”

At MHA, careers are fulfilling and achievements are genuinely celebrated. Whether you’re just starting out or stepping into leadership, there’s room to grow, learn and leave your mark.

Why MHA?

"We offer an incredible quality of service to our clients, and for our people, there’s so much opportunity to collaborate across sectors and specialisms. We also have the backing of the Baker Tilly International network, which adds even more scope to your development."

But for Jack, it always comes back to the people:

“Everyone plays a vital role here, and we genuinely value and respect each other. No matter which office you’re in, the atmosphere is welcoming, down-to-earth and collaborative.”

Advice for Future Trainees

So what advice would Jack give to someone thinking about applying to MHA?

“Grasp every opportunity that comes your way, be curious, and don’t be afraid to learn from those around you. And take the time to understand your study pathway — it makes everything feel more manageable.”

When asked to sum up MHA in one word, Jack doesn’t hesitate:

“Supportive.”

More Than Work

Outside of work, Jack’s a keen traveller and music fan — equally at home in a muddy Glastonbury field as he is exploring new countries (he’s visited every continent except Antarctica). He’s also a trustee of the Shrimps Trust, the supporter group for Morecambe FC, where he’s a lifelong fan.

A Place to Belong, A Career That Grows With You

Jack’s journey is just one of many across MHA — but it perfectly captures what makes the firm special. At MHA, you’re not just building a career; you’re helping shape a better tomorrow for your clients, colleagues, and yourself.

No matter where you’re starting from, there’s a place for you here — and we can’t wait to see where you’ll go.
