Hi, I’m Olivia, an Audit Assistant Manager at MHA. My journey into audit began with curiosity and a love of problem-solving. Since then, I’ve built a career grounded in learning, confidence and the support of the people around me.

How My Career Began

"I applied for an Audit role because it appeared to match the logical, analytical way I think. I had no idea it would become something I genuinely enjoy and something that it would shape my professional journey so strongly."

I began my career after completing my Master of Mathematics degree in November 2020 at what was then Watts Gregory, now MHA. At that time, I didn’t really understand the difference between accountancy and audit. I applied for an audit role because it appeared to match the logical, analytical way I think. I had no idea it would become  something I genuinely enjoy and something that it would shape my professional journey so strongly.

I studied for my ACA qualification alongside my role, becoming ACA qualified in September 2024. From there, I continued to progress and stepped into the role of Assistant Manager in April 2025.

Opportunities That Helped Me Grow

Coming from a Maths background, accountancy felt like a natural fit on paper. But what surprised me, and what quickly became my favourite part of the job, was the amount of client interaction involved. Meeting individuals, charities and businesses and hearing the passion they have for what they do adds meaning to the work we deliver. Audit is often viewed as numbers and processes, but when you meet the people behind those organisations, it becomes far more rewarding.

Since the merger with MHA in 2023, the Cardiff audit team has changed and grown, and I’ve grown with it. We now have the largest group of trainees since I joined, bringing fresh perspectives and new energy into the team. As our team’s portfolio has shifted towards more corporate- focused clients over the past year, having colleagues willing to share their experience and guidance has made a real difference. I’ve also had huge support from our charity sector team in Swansea, particularly from one of our Partners, Rachel Doyle.

Everyone’s path looks different. What matters is being open to learning, trusting your strengths and taking opportunities even when you’re unsure.

My Advice to Women Early in Their Careers

Accountancy and audit are often seen as number-heavy roles, but there is so much more to them. We have trainees and school leavers with completely different degree backgrounds and interests, all of whom bring something unique to the team. If you have an eye for detail, a curious mind, and you enjoy solving problems, there is a place for you in this sector. You do not need a business degree to thrive.
